Summary

A Privacy Tools held another event in the “Privacy Above All” series, with the topic of discussion being... Privacy, Metaverse, and NFT, a topic that is very much in vogue nowadays due to the speed at which everything has been happening.

The free online event, which took place on the 28th, featured presentations by Aline Deparis from Privacy Tools, Bruno Bioni from Data Privacy, and Daniel Marques from AB2L.

Check out the event highlights below.

The conversation begins with Bruno introducing himself and explaining the origin of the metaverse concept. He says: “The Metaverse is a term that was coined in the 90s, and it's even part of a book called “Snow Crash.” It contrasts the reality that a certain antagonist in the book experiences in their daily life with the ability to project themselves into another place, a virtual collective space. That's where the term comes from.”

Bruno goes on to talk about the consequences (both good and bad) of the metaverse universe, including the issue of inequality, which tends to increase in relation to those who will not have access to these technologies.

After Bruno finished speaking, Daniel began his presentation, starting by talking about how the metaverse represents a fusion between virtual reality and physical reality.

“With the metaverse, in wanting to create a new layer of reality, we are also creating a new layer of relationships and interactions: social relationships, through avatars, economic relationships, romantic relationships, the purchase of property, land, and art objects. And how do we certify within the metaverse that a certain object or commercial relationship occurred? We certify all of this through NFTs, which are digital certificates registered on blockchains. There isn't just one blockchain; there are thousands. The main one we know is cryptocurrency. NFTs give you ownership and authenticity of a given project.”"That's what Daniel says."

Privacy issues in the metaverse

Aline continues the conversation by questioning Bruno about what actions he believes will be taken to Maintaining privacy within the metaverse environment..

Bruno then says: “We already have some minimum laws in place to govern this, but there is still more to come, as has been debated in the European Union. The bill on artificial intelligence seeks to capture this complexity of governance in the use of data when you have this mix of virtual and augmented reality where you project yourself into these places as an avatar. Much of your physical, material element is part of this equation, this data-centric economic logic. In Brazil, I think we need to have an extremely important discussion, which is to consider that you need a huge infrastructure, especially connectivity, for the Metaverse to run and be viable.”

Daniel elaborated on the subject by saying: "Today, the entire LGPD (Brazilian General Data Protection Law) is basically conceived from the perspective of Web 2.0. In Web 3, it states the following: Everyone who interacts with and acquires products and services through applications or social networks will own their data. They will know exactly how their data will be used from the beginning through tokens. You will be the owner of that information. This vision may be utopian, and I believe in the utopia of this vision because, in human nature, there is a natural tendency towards decentralization."

The discussion continued with a Q&A session with the audience, addressing their doubts about the topic, which were then debated and answered by the guests.

“Discussions about the metaverse are complex because they take us to a very different level than what we experience today in terms of data volume, data types, and especially the information that can be extracted from it, to the point where you can hack the autonomy of these people in these environments. And organizations that manage to strike a balance, especially within an ethical sustainability agenda, will eventually be able to capture that trust and also new types of data.”"That's all," Bruno concludes.
