Privacy Tools held another event in the "Privacy Above All" series, with the topic of discussion being the LGPD (Brazilian General Data Protection Law) and E-commerce.
The free online event, which took place on the 31st, was led by Rodrigo Guterres from Privacy Tools, and featured special guests Gustavo Godinho from PicPay and Thiago Guedes from DeServ.
Roberta Gomes also gave a talk on e-commerce, and there were also raffles.
Check out the event highlights below.
The event began with Roberta Gomes speaking about data privacy policies on e-commerce platforms.
Next, she spoke about consent and data protection for data subjects, and how data policies need to be tailored to each specific business.
“Firstly, the use of privacy policies, terms of use, and cookie policies has become more prominent. Before, people would grab policies from anywhere, put them on their website, and not even know the risks they were taking. One of the important things we have with the LGPD (Brazilian General Data Protection Law) coming into effect and the use of e-commerce is transparency. Consumers, as data owners, need to know if their data will be shared with anyone, how long the data will remain with the company, and all data processing in general must be disclosed to the data subject,” stated Roberta.
Next, Rodrigo opened the first round of questions, asking Gustavo how companies can organize themselves to map data, and which data makes sense to collect.
Gustavo then talks about the importance of considering the customer journey and how to prevent customers from abandoning their purchase at checkout, stating: “Thinking about principles, not just the need, purpose, or adequacy of data minimization, I think that first and foremost, we have to think about the customer journey. We need to think about something easy, fast, effective, and that prevents the customer from abandoning their purchase at checkout. The clearer, more transparent, and more effective you are within an e-commerce platform, the better you will convert sales.”
Growing increase in cyberattacks affects e-commerce.
Rodrigo continues the conversation by questioning Thiago Guedes about the reason for the growth of cyberattacks targeting the e-commerce sector and about necessary measures involving the issue of privacy.
Thiago responded as follows: “Data leaks have always existed. Anyone who has worked in this area for a long time knows this. Unfortunately, it's a constant problem. But, it seems that, if we were to conduct an empirical experiment, we've seen an increase in this. The primary reason is the pandemic; many companies had to go digital, but perhaps they weren't mature enough in terms of information security.”
The conversation continues, addressing issues of adaptation and contingency processes.
Finally, Roberta is invited to answer a question from an internet user about how to legally prepare for the new reality where everything is more digital.
Roberta then states that: “the biggest risk we have is the human risk. I always say this in companies. It's no use having the most incredible system, the most secure partner if the operator doesn't even know what the LGPD (Brazilian General Data Protection Law) is. Employees need to be trained and made to understand that it's not just about signing a contract; it's about ensuring knowledge and guaranteeing the minimization of incidents.”
