Cook's stance has demonstrated support for data privacy for some time now.

It is important to emphasize that Tim Cook has long adopted a firmer stance on personal data privacy issues, always making a point of mentioning it as a fundamental right.

Below is the full text of Tim Cook's letter, translated by MacMagazine:

"Dear Presidents Cantwell and Pallone and Committee members Wicker and McMorris Rodgers."

Thank you for your continued work on privacy legislation. Apple continues to support efforts at the federal level to establish strong privacy protections for consumers, and we are encouraged by the preliminary proposals your teams have produced.

We recognize that there are outstanding issues to be resolved, but the areas of agreement appear to far outweigh the differences. Your drafts would provide substantial protections for consumers, and we are writing to offer our strong support in achieving this common goal. With your work, along with President Biden's help in better protecting children's privacy, it seems that Americans are closer than ever to achieving meaningful privacy protections.

At Apple, we believe privacy is a fundamental human right. That's why we consistently advocate for comprehensive privacy legislation and contribute to that process whenever possible. It's also why we always create products and features that protect users and their information by default. We do this by minimizing the data we collect, processing as much data as possible on a user's device, giving users transparency about what data is collected and greater control over how it's used, and building robust systems to protect user data across all our products and services.

While Apple continues to innovate and develop new ways to protect user data, only Congress can provide robust privacy protections for all Americans. The continued absence of this important legislation will unfortunately perpetuate an inefficient approach that leaves many without the rigorous standards we expect to see as a result of their hard work.

We strongly recommend that you move forward with comprehensive privacy legislation as quickly as possible, and we are ready to assist in this process in the coming days.”
