Summary

The need for compliance with the General Data Protection Law (LGPD) in federal public organizations remains a significant challenge. The Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) has highlighted the importance of control actions to verify compliance with the legislation, aiming to ensure that public bodies and entities throughout the country are aligned with the requirements for the protection of personal data.

Law 13.709/2018 (General Law on the Protection of Personal Data – LGPD) came into effect in August 2020, and a year later, the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) found that 76,7% of federal public organizations remained at insignificant or initial levels of compliance with that law.

With the goal of evaluating the progress of adaptations in various sectors of public organizations, the TCU (Brazilian Federal Court of Accounts) proposes a new control action, which also aims to guide managers and internal audit units in conducting initiatives to adapt to the LGPD (Brazilian General Data Protection Law). This round of inspections is being carried out in partnership with the courts of accounts of nine states of the federation (TCE-AM, TCE-BA, TCE-CE, TCE-PA, TCE-PE, TCE-PR, TCE-RJ, TCE-RN and TCE-SC).
