An event held in August launched the publication "Privacy and protection of personal data 2021: perspectives from individuals, companies and public organizations in Brazil", by Cetic (Regional Center for Studies on the Development of the Information Society).
The document presented information collected from 2.556 internet users and 1.473 companies related to the protection of personal data.
The event, which has been held for 12 years, was organized by the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br) and the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (NIC.br), and featured the participation of several national and international experts.
The document released by Cetic at the event presented information collected between the second half of 2021 and the first half of this year. Its results raised some concerns regarding the risks involved... processing of personal data.
The research indicated that 77% of respondents reported having uninstalled an app from their smartphone, while 69% stated they had avoided visiting a website due to concern.
Research has shown that we have a lot of room for improvement.
Among the respondents who stated concern about your dataMost stated that they use security checks, refuse permission to use data for advertising purposes, and read the... privacy policies to try to protect your data.
Other statistics collected by the survey showed that:
There is a difference in the level of concern about data use according to race. After all, 52% of Black people and 49% of mixed-race people stated that they were very concerned about their data, while among people who identified as white, 43% stated the same.
Another interesting piece of data also relates to the concern of companies, given that, Only 32% of the companies surveyed claimed to have a privacy policy that informs users how their data is handled.
Among the companies surveyed, 30% stated that they conduct security tests as a precaution against data leaks, while 24% stated that they had developed a compliance plan with the law.
Finally, it's important to emphasize that we still don't view the issue of personal data protection with the seriousness we should. However, we have made progress on this topic.
A Companies' demand for DPOs The concern of the general population regarding this issue has also increased considerably. This demonstrates that, as people become more aware of the risks, they also tend to avoid doing business with companies that do not prioritize the proper handling of personal data.
Ultimately, companies that fail to invest in compliance will, sooner or later, suffer the financial losses resulting from their negligence towards their customers.
